The Infinity Pro Start System (part number INF-PRO) is a portable electronic start system for swimming made by Colorado Time Systems (CTS). It is the current entry-level model in the company’s start-system line, and the direct successor to the Infinity Start System (INF-SSM), which reached end of life in 2024. Like its predecessor it packages a start horn, a strobe, and a wired microphone into one battery-powered unit with a molded carrying handle; CTS describes it as “the ideal entry-level swimming start system for all pools.”¹²

Naming and product line¶

The Infinity Pro is the portable, entry-level model of the CTS start line and the current member of the Infinity family; the deck-wired Championship family is the larger alternative. For the full lineup and a side-by-side comparison, see the start-systems overview.

The Infinity Pro replaced the older Infinity Start System (INF-SSM); the two are similar in size and role, but the Pro adds adjustable strobe intensity and start-tone volume, an alternate start tone, both normally-open and normally-closed start signaling, a 60-minute automatic shut-off, and a faster-charging battery. The INF-PRO-F variant is the same unit supplied with a 230 V charger for markets outside North America (the base INF-PRO ships with a 115 V charger); this is the same -F suffix CTS uses on the Championship line.¹³

Design and hardware¶

The unit measures about 14 in long and weighs 11.0 lb, in a corrosion-resistant enclosure rated IP56. The internal speaker is a 40-watt moisture- and corrosion-resistant horn speaker that CTS rates at up to 120 dB at 1 m. A strobe light on top flashes with the horn, and both the strobe intensity and the start-tone volume are adjustable so the unit can be set for outdoor, indoor, or office use. The wired microphone has two start buttons (left and right) for either hand, plus a push-to-talk switch.¹

Power comes from an internal gel-cell battery. CTS rates it for more than 12 hours of race-start operation on a charge; it charges to 90% in about four hours and 100% in about 6.5 hours, and for safety the unit will not operate while charging, which keeps AC power off the pool deck. An automatic shut-off powers the unit down after 60 minutes of inactivity to conserve the battery.¹

Operation¶

The starter presses push-to-talk with either start button to fire the start: a horn blast with a simultaneous strobe flash and a start pulse to the timer. A false-start recall function lets the starter alert the competitors. The unit can sound the standard CTS start tone or an alternate tone, and doubles as a limited public-address system for announcements.¹²

The strobe flashes with the horn, and officials and watch timers are meant to start from the flash rather than the tone. Connections¶

A start jumper cable (R-INF-SJxx) connects the unit’s start output to a deck plate, wall plate, cable harness, or timer. Unlike the older Infinity, which sent only normally-open pulses, the Infinity Pro can signal a timer with either normally-open or normally-closed start signaling, so it works with a wider range of timers without factory modification.¹ The speaker port outputs a maximum of 40 W and accepts one external R-INF-SPxxx speaker; the manual directs that only the CTS-approved Infinity external speaker be attached, because any other type of speaker can cause the start system to fail.¹ Integrated attachment points let the unit mount on a tabletop, on the TR-3 tripod, or on a flagpole with the START-FPM-2 mount.¹
