Hy-Tek Sports Software

Hy-Tek Sports Software is an American software company whose meet and team management programs run most competitive swimming in the United States. It has been selling swimming software since at least 1984, and has been owned by The Active Network since 2008.12

Unlike every other company in this register, Hy-Tek makes no equipment. It appears here because the timing consoles that do are built to talk to its programs: Colorado Time Systems and Daktronics both document interfaces to Meet Manager, and a CTS facility questionnaire asks an architect what meet management software a new pool will run and offers three boxes, Hy-Tek, other, or none.3

History

The company first appears in the swimming press in June 1984, when Swimming World reported Hy-Tek, Ltd. as the publisher of a package called Computerized Swim League, whose author is named as B. Thomas Taylor.1 By October 1986 it was advertising Meet Manager and Team Manager together.4

When the company began is not a settled question, and the reason is that Hy-Tek kept changing its own answer. Its About page said the firm had been in business since 1981 when read in 1999, since 1986 in 2000, and since 1984 in 2004.567 Only one of those is attached to a legal act: the Maryland incorporation of 1982, which the surviving company still gives.8

Robert M. Mroz is named as president from 1988 and remained President and Chief Executive into the 2000s.9105 He ran the company alongside another career entirely: thirty years at the Federal Communications Commission in field enforcement, retiring in 1997.8 Under him Hy-Tek reached beyond software, working with Polar on a heart monitor able to read a swimmer’s rate while actually stroking rather than only at the wall, with the readings passed to a program that stored and analysed them.10

The company was in two places at once for most of the 1990s, and the wiki previously described this as a move. It was not. Through the late 1980s the address in Hy-Tek’s own advertising was 6502 Micro Drive, Dayton, Maryland, and it was still being printed in 1991.11 The corporate office stayed in that Baltimore-Washington corridor while the sales and support centre sat in eastern North Carolina, which is what the New Bern address and the 919 and later 252 telephone numbers represent.512 A third location followed: by September 2007 the products were being sold and supported by Sports-Tek, LLC from Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch in Florida.13

On 8 July 2008 The Active Network announced that it had acquired Hodgson’s Hurricanes, Inc. and certain assets of T&C Products, Inc., which traded together as HY-TEK Sports Software, and quoted Tom Taylor as a co-founder.2 Active owns and supports the products now, though the company’s own domain did not redirect to Active’s until 2018, a decade after the sale.14

What Active did not buy was Hy-Tek, Ltd. The Maryland corporation stayed with Mroz and still trades. It publishes firearms-training software now, and still describes itself as incorporated in Maryland in 1982.8 The swimming company and that business are the same legal person, which is worth knowing before searching for either.

Products

The programs write Hy-Tek’s own file formats, HY3, CL2 and HYV, none of which the company has published a specification for.

Hy-Tek sells equivalent meet and team programs for track and field, which are outside this wiki’s scope.2 Two further products of the DOS era, a set of swim-training packages advertised from 1986 and Personal and Pro SWIMMER for Palm OS handhelds from 2002, are recorded in this page’s research notes and given no pages of their own.
